Australia's national anthem

Australia's national anthem is called Advance Australia Fair and was officially recognized in 1977 by a referendum (MIDI-file download, 4,2KB). The words were written in 1884 and its content has been disputed due to the fact that on the one hand the aborigines are not respected and on the other hand the British orientation of the second verse is too much for many people. Therefor the second verse is normally not sung:

official national anthem Advance Australia Fair official national anthem

Australians all let us rejoice
For we are young and free
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil
Our home is girt by sea
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia Fair

When gallant Cook from Albion sailed
To trace wide oceans o'er
True British courage born him on trug
Till he landed on our shore
And there he raised old England's flag
The standard of the brave
With all her faults we love her still
Britannia rules the wave
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia fair

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair
In joyful strains then let us sing
Advance Australia Fair

The official second anthem which must be played for Royal visitors is the British anthem God Save The Queen (MIDI-file download, 2,4KB). There are different theories who might be the author of the words. The origin probably dates back to 17th century. The anthem was brought to the public in 1745 in London. Normally only the first verse is sung, occasionally the third:

official second anthem God Save The Queen official second anthem

God save our gracious Queen
Long live our noble Queen
God save the Queen
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the Queen

O Lord our God arise
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall
Confound their politics
Frustrate their knavish tricks
On Thee our hopes we fix
God save us all

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour
Long may she reign
May she defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

Not in this land alone
But be God's mercies known
From shore to shore
Lord make the nations see
That men should brothers be
And form one family
The wide world over

From every latent foe
From the assassins blow
God save the Queen
O'er her thine arm extend
For Britain's sake defend
Our mother, prince, and friend
God save the Queen

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring
May he sedition hush
And like a torrent rush
Rebellious Scots to crush
God save the King

The inofficial Australian anthem might be the famous folk song Waltzing Matilda which was on second place in the referendum of 1977 mentioned above (MIDI-file download, 14,1KB). The words of this hymn of the hearts was written in 1894 by the famous Australian poet of the people Andrew "Banjo" Barton Paterson (1864-1941):

inofficial anthem Waltzing Matilda inofficial anthem

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong
Under the shade of a Coolibah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited til his billy boiled
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
He sang as he watched and waited til his billy boiled
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me

Down came a jumbuck to drink from that billabong
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee
He sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tuckerbag
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
He sang as he stowed that jumbuck in his tuckerbag
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me

Down came the squatter mounted on a thoroughbred
Down came policemen, one, two, three
Whose that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
Whose that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag
You'll come a waltzing matilda with me

Now the swagman he upped, and leapt into the billabong
You'll never catch me alive, said he
And his ghost may be heared if you pass by that billabong
Who'll come a waltzing matilda with me
Waltzing Matilda, waltzing Matilda
You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
And his ghost may be heared if you pass by that billabong
Who'll come a waltzing Matilda with me
